Education & Training

Thanks so much to the VPPA Tidewater Guild for sponsoring my workshop “Walk into the Light” last June.  Things have been so busy here at studio and with travel that this is the first opportunity I have had to post the photos from the demonstration. Thanks to Richi Gregory for sponsoring this event at her studio in Sandbridge, Va Beach.  A special thanks to Cheryl and Nate Nelson for driving so far to work as models for the event.  Also donating their talents as models were; Laurie Bateman, The McGee family and Adelaide Rooney, assistant to Richi.  Richard St. Peter did a great job organizing the event.  Walk into the Light is mostly about pre- visualizing composition and exposure before taking a portrait.  We worked with off camera flash and lighting ratios, accomplished with the combination of ambient/fill  and key lighting.  You can read more about the program “Walk into the Light”

Thank you Blue Ridge VA photographers!

Education & Training

Many thanks to the Virginia Professional Photographers (VPPA) Blue Ridge district for presenting my “Walk Into the Light” seminar on lighting for outdoor portraits.  The weather was beautiful and the Smith Mountain Lake gave us a wonderful backdrop for our portrait demonstration.  All images posted here were made with a Hasselblad 4D 40, one off-camera light, a Phototek umbrella with diffuser, and an Elinchrome Ranger Quadra Rx.  Important in this demonstration was the use of ambient light either as rim, main or fill with additive off camera light used either as fill or main lighting.  In addition, lighting ratios to give depth to our subjects were also achieved through careful use of a Sekonic meter, measuring incidental light with both ambient and ambient fill combined to establish ratios.  These images are un-retouched; only levels have been set. As well, the use of background compositional devices was demonstrated.  Our family, on the path to the lake,  is framed by the trees…

Thank you Northern Virginia photographers!

Education & Training

The Virginia Professional Photographers (VPPA) Northern District presented a wonderful day of teaching and shooting demonstrations by Gordon Kreplin.  In his program, “Walk Into the Light”, Gordon talked about the use of ambient and fill light combined, in both outdoor and indoor sessions, to create lighting ratios. Our senior models were beautiful and full of sparkle.  Several images posted of them were done in very bright conditions.  Demonstrated was how to meter for hot spots, record ambient light readings and then combine with an additional light source.  As well, compositional elements were of importance to bring subjects out of the frame.  Note the long fence behind one senior that becomes a sort of reverse leading line. Finally, Robert and Joanie Ballard were kind enough to allow a whole pack of us into their beautiful gift store and gallery.  We used our Elinchrome Ranger with a Larson 17×17 soft box directed at the faces of our lovely couple.  We shot this…

The Tennessee Professional Photographers Association state convention was set in the beautiful Smoky Mountains.   The day after Gordon gave his “Walk Into the Light” Seminar, he took a group of pros into the mountains for a safari.  Although the day was rainy, great fun was had by all. Next – back to Virginia for the fall foliage!  Call us for more info.
